Peyronie's Disease & The Autoimmune System

Understanding Peyronie's Disease Plaque
In a healthy male, the immune system protects the body from infections by identifying and destroying harmful substances like bacteria and viruses. However, in autoimmune diseases, the immune system mistakenly targets healthy cells, releasing autoantibodies that attack these cells. As a result, men with autoimmune diseases may develop Peyronie's disease when the immune system attacks cells in the genital area, leading to scarring and the formation of fibrous plaques. There are more than 80 autoimmune diseases, some, like type 1 diabetes, affect only one organ (such as the pancreas), while others can impact various parts of the body.

Some Autoimmune Diseases that may be linked with Peyronie's Disease
Autoimmune diseases can affect various parts of the body, including the skin, joints, heart, lungs, kidneys, and brain, potentially causing permanent tissue damage. In individuals with lupus, symptoms may fluctuate, with periods of illness (known as flare-ups) and times of remission. These flare-ups can range in severity and do not follow a predictable pattern. Examples of autoimmune systems are below:
Sjögren's Syndrome:
"Sjögren's syndrome is a rheumatic disease that affects the glands responsible for producing moisture. It most commonly causes dryness in the mouth and eyes, but it may also affect joints, tendons, ligaments, bones, and muscles. Symptoms can vary and may include redness, swelling, pain, and a loss of function in the affected areas."
Behçet's Disease:
"Behçet's disease causes inflammation of the blood vessels and can affect various parts of the body. Common symptoms include sores in the mouth or on the genitals. More serious symptoms may involve swelling, redness, and pain in the eyes or other areas of the body."
